Presenting the Alpacas at Sunset Farm

When I originally decided to get into Alpacas, it was at the suggestion of my  friend Lorraine White.  Below are photos of my first alpacas.
Picture
Cactus Brandy cooling herself in the cool water while the others wait their turn. Can you tell that Cactus Brandy has only one eye? She had poked it out somehow at her previous owners', who being professional alpaca farmers stitched it up themselves. Brandy pretty much rules the roost.
Picture
Brownie (registered name is Darwin). One of the first two alpacas I bought.

Here Honey is pictured in the foreground. Behind her are, from left to right, Hank (white), Cactus Brandy (black), and Starsky (brown).
Picture
Like most Alpacas and Llamas that have white fiber and blue eyes, Hank is deaf.

Hank, Brandy and Starky all eager to cool off in the fresh water during the summer heat. Lorraine spraying the alpacas in the heat of the day in mid summer 2011

Faithful Livestock Guardians . . .

Unlike Llamas, the smaller alpacas need the protection afforded by livestock guardian dogs. Here at Sunset Alpaca Farm we have our faithful canines on duty around the clock. They are as much apart of the herd family as each of the alpacas.

Picture
Yukon. I found him abandoned at the Bolivar sale barn. He now helps guard the alpacas and makes sure that Clyde does not get too much sleep. All of the dogs are sheared soon after the alpacas as Yukon found out shortly before this picture was taken.
Picture
Bonnie & Clyde, Bonnie is a full blooded Great Pyrenees and Clyde is half Great Pyrenees and Border Collie. Both are great Protectors of the alpacas.
Picture
On hot days/nights fans must be put in the barns for the alpacas/Llamas as Hobo sees here and enjoys the cooling breeze as well.
